London scrisse, tra il 1906 e l’inizio del 1907, nove articoli di contenuto autobiografico – pubblicati sul “Cosmopolitan” – che, l’anno successivo, vennero riuniti in volume dando vita a un vero e proprio romanzo autobiografico che prese il titolo di The Road. Era autore ormai affermato ma, scrivendo delle sue esperienze da hobo relative agli anni 1892 e poi nuovamente 1894, sfugge al tentativo di venire ingabbiato in uno schema “sociologico” che la stampa voleva cucire addosso allo scrittore più pagato d’America, forse per cercare di renderlo “rispettabile” agli occhi di quella borghesia alla quale aveva ormai accesso ma che continuava ad aborrire.
