"Helfen Sie mir! O mein Gott, helfen Sie mir!", flehte sie und hastete auf den Tresen zu. Mit zitternden Fingern zog sie einen zerknitterten Zettel hervor, den sie im Futter ihrer Kostümjacke versteckt hatte.
"Ein Telegramm, Madam?", fragte Telegraph Clerk Arthur Higgins, weil er nicht wusste, wie er auf die völlig aufgelöste Kundin reagieren sollte.
Eilig schob sie ihm den Fetzen Papier zu. "Bitte schicken Sie es sofort ab. Bitte! Ich bin in größter Gef..." Sie zuckte zusammen, als draußen Schritte polterten.
Higgins sah Verzweiflung und Todesangst in ihrem Gesicht. Und er reagierte blitzschnell. Las die hingekritzelten Worte und stopfte sich den Zettel in den Mund.
