Colonel Terence Redford sah den roten Schimmer der Morgensonne auf den Fichtenwipfeln in der Bergschneise am Ende des Tales glänzen. Keine hundert Schritte breit war das Tal an dieser Stelle. Ein Bote aus dem Fort. Kaum in Rufweite, fing er auch schon an zu schreien: "Das Fort brennt! Die Sioux haben das Fort angegriffen!" Redford dachte an seine Frau Louise, und der Schrecken durchzuckte ihn wie eine Stichflamme.
