Der Bretterverschlag an der Südweide der Stonefork Ranch war neun Fuß hoch und sechzehn Fuß lang. Seit Jahr und Tag war der Verschlag mit alten Strohballen zugestopft, die wie Zunder in Flammen aufgehen würden. Die Rancher im Calabasas Valley würden glauben, dass sich die Ballen durch die Mittagshitze entzündet hatte.
"Komm schon!", raunte der Mann im lehmbraunen Staubmantel und winkte seinem Gefährten. "Stell das Pulver dort drüben ab!" Der andere Berittene stieg aus dem Sattel und schleppte eine Ledertasche herüber. Als er sie im Schatten der Bretterwand abgestellt hatte, trat der andere Mann hinzu und rollte die Lunte aus. "Höchstens eine Viertelstunde", schätzte er die Länge der Zündschnur. "Stecken wir sie an und verschwinden!"
