Lassiter stand am Tisch seines spärlich möblierten Hotelzimmers. Er hatte seinen Revolver auseinandergenommen, ölte den Lauf mit einer dünnen Bürste aus Draht und wachste das Holster mit einem Spezialmittel, das er in dem Drugstore in der Mainstreet gekauft hatte. Da klopfte es an die Tür.
Er legte die Waffe ab, öffnete die Tür und erblickte eine junge rotblonde Frau auf dem Flur. Verlegen nestelte sie an ihrer Umhängetasche.
Das Mädchen gefiel ihm. "Kann ich etwas für Sie tun, Miss?"
Sie holte tief Luft, dann sagte sie: "Ich bin Jane Mullins vom Girls Ballet aus St. Louis. Ich komme zu Ihnen, weil ich Hilfe brauche. Sie sind unsere letzte Rettung, Mr. Lassiter."
Er hob die Brauen. "Sie machen mich neugierig. Was ist passiert, Miss Mullins?"
"Es geht um einen Mord", antwortete sie.
