Comme souvent chez Jane Austen, malentendus et chassés-croisés amoureux se succèdent dans ce roman publié à titre posthume en 1817. La romancière s’attaque à la parodie du genre gothique, très en vogue à son époque, et signe là un récit fin et plein d’humour.
