The study deals with petitions from the Esclavos series of the Ecuadorian National Archives from court cases of the Corte Suprema de Quito in the period 1702–1849, in which enslaved people were involved directly. The focus is on the study of argumentative strategies as discourse traditions: including topoi, linguistic means of constructing ethos and pathos, and linguistic marking of argumentative functions and structures.
