About the author

Jiwang Yan earned a PhD at Tohoku University, Japan in 2000 and is currently a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Keio University, Japan (2012–present), leading the Precision Machining and Nano Processing Laboratory. As adjunct appointments, he has served as a Specially Appointed Professor at Tokyo Institute of Technology (2017–2024) and Leverhulme Visiting Professor at the University of Manchester (2018–2019). His research areas include ultraprecision machining, micro/nano manufacturing, laser processing, and manufacturing sustainability. As a principal investigator, he has led 20+ nationally funded projects and 70+ industrial projects. He has authored/co-authored 300+ peer-reviewed international journal papers, given 150+ keynote/invited talks, and received 40+ awards. He is the author of the book Micro Nano Scale Laser Processing of Hard Brittle Materials (Elsevier 2019) and the editor of the book Micro and Nano Fabrication Technology (Springer 2018). He is a member of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers (JSME), the Japan Society for Precision Engineering (JSPE), the Japan Society for Abrasive Technology (JSAT), the Japan Society for Applied Physics (JSAP), the American Society for Precision Engineering (ASPE), and the European Society for Precision Engineering and Nanotechnology (euspen). Since 2022, he has been serving as the executive director of JSPE and the Chairman of the Publication Sector and a board member of the Japan Society of Laser Technology (JSLT). He also serves on the editorial boards of several journals, including International Journal of Machine Tools and Manufacturer (IJMTM), Journal of Material Processing Technology (JMPT), and International Journal of Extreme Manufacturing (IJEM). He was elected as a Fellow of the International Academy for Production Engineering (CIRP) and a Fellow (foreign) of the Engineering Academy of Japan (EAJ) in 2024 and a Fellow of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) in 2025.
