Die Wahlverwandtschaften ist ein Roman von Johann Wolfgang von Goethe aus dem Jahr 1809. Er beschreibt die Geschichte des in abgeschiedener Zweisamkeit lebenden Paares Charlotte und Eduard, deren Ehe durch das Hinzukommen zweier weiterer Figuren auseinanderbricht. Wie gleichsam in einer chemischen Reaktion erfahren beide Eheleute eine starke, jeweils auch erwiderte, neue Anziehung: die vernunftbetonte Charlotte zu dem verständig-tatkräftigen Hauptmann Otto; der impulsiv-leidenschaftliche Eduard zu der heranwachsenden, auf stille Weise reizvollen Ottilie. Der Konflikt zwischen Leidenschaft und Vernunft führt ins Chaos und schließlich zu einem tragischen Ende.

Johann Wolfgang Goethe, ab 1782 von Goethe (* 28. August 1749 in Frankfurt am Main; † 22. März 1832 in Weimar), war ein deutscher Dichter und Naturforscher. Er gilt als einer der bedeutendsten Schöpfer deutschsprachiger Dichtung.
