La vicenda è incentrata sullo scellerato patto che un uomo sapientissimo, Faust, stipula con un rappresentante del Diavolo, Mefistofele, al fine di poter accedere ai segreti più arcani del mondo. In vita Mefistofele servirà Faust con le sue arti magiche, per poi ottenerne in punto di morte l'anima e consegnarla alla dannazione eterna.
Johann Wolfgang Goethe (Francoforte sul Meno, 1749 – Weimar, 1832) è stato uno dei maggiori scrittori, poeti e drammaturghi europei, un artista e pensatore completo. Fra le sue opera ricordiamo, oltre a Faust, anche I dolori del giovane Werther (1774), Torquato Tasso (1780), ed Elegie romane (1795).
