Fuori dal Woffington Theatre a Londra una lunga coda di persone aspetta di assistere all'ultima rappresentazione di un musical, il più popolare che si sia visto da anni. Quando finalmente le porte del teatro si aprono e la coda si muove, un uomo piega lentamente la testa sul petto e si accascia a terra, forse svenuto. Le persone accorse a soccorrerlo fanno un balzo indietro, inorridite: l'uomo è trafitto da un piccolo pugnale d'argento. Chi può aver compiuto un simile gesto, sotto gli occhi di tanti testimoni ignari? E soprattutto, chi era l'uomo in coda? Perché è stato ucciso? Non ha documenti con sé: sembra impossibile risalire alla sua identità, e ancor più al movente del suo assassino. Per fortuna il caso viene affidato all'ispettore Grant, che mettendo a frutto il suo grande acume riuscirà a venire a capo di un delitto apparentemente irrisolvibile.
