I ordered this book sight unseen as the text for a graduate level course in nursing informatics. I did so based upon the repartition of the authors and as I myself had used the second edition in my own training. It was a mistake. As is often the case, the text has grown in size, but of course, informatics in nursing is also much more complex then 20 years ago. It is very inclusive and detailed. The text has now become extremely hard for the average student to read. Most of my students are asking for clarification, additional resources, or "just a simple explanation" of their assigned readings. As faculty, the most disappointing aspect was the udder and complete lack of any faculty support by the publisher's McGraw-Hill. In half my phone calls to them they could not recognize that this text was even published by them. Despite being stated that such support was available in the Preface, no one has been able to locate faculty support such as exam questions, etc. After repeated requests, I was sent a zip file of PowerPoint slides to use by chapters. But, fully a quarter of the slides are blank stating "Please see book for figure xx." If you are in the field of Nursing Informatics or studying for the certification exam and looking for THE authoritative text on the subject, this is it. If you need a good graduate (or undergraduate) text for classroom use, keep looking. This is most certainly not it.
