About this ebook

The compelling first novel in the ADAM KINDE Alternate Future Mysteries series.

2421 AD. 300 years after the second coming of Joshua.

Pastor Adam Kinde has only ever wanted three things: to do what’s right, to serve his parish, and to understand his world.

Until Beth Raven walks into his life. He can’t figure her out. He’s never before met an atheist or heard of any religion other than his own.

A romance with a heretic should be out of the question.

Then the dead body shows up in Adam’s living room.

He’s a pastor, not a detective, and a murder investigation is no place for an amateur.

But when his servant and lifelong friend is arrested Adam joins Beth on a journey that uncovers a dark reality under the serene surface of his world.

If you like alternate future worlds, sci-fi, or a good mystery, you want to read The Human.

This was a pretty good read. Definitely got 1984 vibes, if instead of an autocratic government it was the church that took over the world. Plot was simple but well executed. Characters were interesting, though I felt that some of them lacked depth. But in such a short book focused on one character the development was decent. I like the worldbuilding. Watts only explains what he needs to, so he keeps you curious about how the world operates and how it came to be this way. Keen for more.

A strange mystery that involves a minister of a twisted pseudo religion and his reluctant search for mysteries unknown. It sort of plods along not getting very suspenseful or having much action. I lost the thread halfway through the novel and just couldn't find it in the vague hints and mundane background characters. Weird murders, the possibility of sorcerers, maybe magic? Sort of a mishmash of plot and character.

This book was written as if George Orwell's "1984" met "Hitchhiker's guide to the Galaxy". It's clever and intriguing. The story follows Pastor Adam Kinde, who is living in an alternate future, where there was a religious awakening 300 years earlier. He meets an atheist and is instantly infatuated with her. This is around the time everything he thought he knew about life starts to fall apart. He's always tried to live his life the best way possible, but now with a dead body in his living room, and the police being less than helpful, Adam starts to see the world as much more than what he sees. I enjoy the theological thinking and discussion the characters have in this book, and I can't wait to read the rest of the series. It's an alternate history science fiction feel. But there is also magic in this universe. Because this book fits into so many different categories there is something for everyone. I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author via Voracious Readers Only.
