It covers the recent technologies in two broad thematic areas: energy and materials. Various topics covered in this book include advanced materials and characterization, mechanical behavior of materials, nanomaterials and nanotechnology, biomaterials, composite materials, environmental-friendly materials, structural materials, advances in aerospace technology, and advanced materials and manufacturing. The book is useful for students, researchers, and professionals in the area of mechanical engineering, especially various domains of materials.

About the author

Dr. K. Rajkumar has completed his Ph.D. on microwave processing, characterization of metal composites, at IIT Delhi. His important research contributions include microwave processing of highly reactive metal powder, and microwave heat treatments of metallic materials, tribological behaviour of magnesium and copper composites. Based on his research work, he has published 28 international journal papers in SCI Journals, 30 international conference papers, and four chapters in the microwave processing and characterization field. His current research interests are in microwave processing of biomaterial, tribology, and metal nanocomposites. He is guiding 7 Ph.D. scholars. Dr. Elammaran Jayamani joined Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus (SUTS) in 2007 as a mechanical engineer lecturer. Dr. Elammaran is currently serving as a senior lecturer and a course coordinator of the Mechanical Engineering program at the Faculty of Engineering, Computing, and Science. Elammaran received his B.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Madras, India, received his Master of Technology from Pondicherry University, India. His Doctor of Philosophy (Materials and process) at University Malaysia Sarawak, Malaysia, has completed his Graduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching (Higher Education) at the Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne, Australia. His research interest involves polymer matrix composites, energy and environment sustainability, and thermo-fluids system. He is a member of the International Register of Professional Engineering (Int PE UK), a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers—Chartered Engineer CEng MI MechE (UK), registered as a graduate engineer in Mechanical Engineering with Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), and a life member in the Indian Society for Technical Education (MISTE). He has published more than seventy international journals, chapters, and conference papers. He is an accredited supervisor for Masters by research (M.Eng.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) studies and currently guiding masters and Ph.D. students. Dr. P. Ramkumar joined as an assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering in IIT Madras in 2012. Prior to coming to IIT Madras, he was an associate professor at SSN College of Engineering, Chennai. Dr. Ramkumar received his B.E in Mechanical Engineering from College of Engineering, Guindy, Anna University, and his M.Tech. (Industrial Tribology) from IIT Madras. Later, he pursued Ph.D. from University of Southampton, UK, and did his postdoctoral fellowship in University of Leicester, UK. He has published more than fifty international journals, chapters, and conference papers. He is a supervisor for postgraduate and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) studies and currently guiding masters and Ph.D. students. His research interests are in the field of tribology, including developing new materials and coatings for engine tribology, nano-lubrication, gearbox design, electrostatic condition monitoring, and developing new materials for brake application.
