Der Band ist Richard Riess, dem emeritierten Lehrstuhlinhaber für Praktische Theologie an der Augustana-Hochschule Neuendettelsau, als einem der Pioniere der modernen Seelsorgebewegung zum 80. Geburtstag gewidmet. [A Short History of Pastoral Care in the 20th Century. Biographical Essays] The volume, intended for a broader audience, contains 39 portraits of important personalities of the history of pastoral care in the 20th century. The portraits combine the life histories of the portrayed persons with their understanding of pastoral care and outline its impulses and effects as a whole. It contains not only portraits of influential personalities from the academic discipline of pastoral care but also from related disciplines and of other representative pastoral counsellors. In this way a differentiated picture emerges of an important period of modern pastoral care and its efforts to develop an adequate theory and practice of Christian pastoral care for people in need. The volume is dedicated to Richard Riess on the occasion of his 80th birthday – emeritus holder of a chair for practical theology at the Augustana Divinity School (Neuendettelsau), a pioneer of the modern pastoral care movement in the 20th century.
