Dans La Commune, d’ailleurs texte posthume, Kropotkine répond à ses détracteurs qui l’accusent d’être un réactionnaire, et de vouloir chercher une inspiration dépassée dans l’exemple des communes du Moyen-Âge. Kropoktine explique brillamment (comme toujours) qu’il n’en est rien. Bien au contraire, l’exemple des Communes du 12ème siècle, libres et indépendantes, montre que la société peut se passer d’Etat.
