Piper Miller has been imprisoned but now is being offered the chance of a pardon if she participates in the Dragon Duels – and manages to survive the ten days. Knowing this will not be something they expect her to survive, she still needs try to regain her freedom. It appears that she is to be tossed into the “game” with fifty other prisoners and will face unrelenting exposure to death from the environment, her other competing contestants, and random unpredictable fire-breathing dragons. Can she and her childhood friend, Joseph, possibly survive? I always enjoy this author’s books and the characters we meet. This is a fast-paced story with lots of tension as we watch the competition for survival and freedom. Piper is suffering the punishment for a starving child who needed a piece of bread to survive, so it sets the stage of the cruel dystopian world she exists in and sets the reader’s expectations of what is to be endured through participation in the Dragon Duels. Get ready for the series that this prequel prepares us for.

This is a prequel in Greenwood's new series the Dragon Duels. This is a short read but a great intro into this new world of dragons. This is the story of Piper and Joseph and their journey to freedom. A fast paced storyline that will have you excited to read more. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

What a great prequel to this fantasy series. It sort of reminded me of Hunger Games but with dragons and some other twists. It's exciting and had me on edge, in a good way, the whole time reading. I can't wait to start the actual series after getting a glimpse of this one.
