Spanish settlers founded Albuquerque in 1706, making it the third of only four villas (towns) in colonial New Mexico. Located in the Rio Abajo along a wide turn on the Rio Grande, the settlement developed from a small farming community into New Mexico's largest, most modern city. Richard Melzer is a professor of history at the University of New Mexico's Valencia Campus. He is an award-winning author of many books, including two previous Arcadia publications: Fred Harvey Houses of the Southwest and Sanatoriums of New Mexico.
