About this ebook

As a cartography student, Jak has always dreamed of finding the lost dragon gate and exploring and mapping distant worlds.

Developing magical powers and becoming a powerful wizard? Not a chance.

Wizards are cruel and inhumane, warring with each other from their great sky cities and keeping most of humanity enslaved. Jak wants nothing to do with them.

But when he and his archaeologist mother unearth the gate, they attract the attention of the very wizards they sought to avoid. Even more troubling, Jak starts developing magical powers of his own, powers that could rival those of the great rulers.

Fate may have given him the opportunity to change the world.

But the wizard rulers don’t like change, and when they detect threats, they send their elite assassins to eliminate them.

If Jak can’t unlock the power of the gate, and the powers within himself, the world will remain enslaved forever.

Enjoyed this book enough to buy the next in this series. The main reason I'm giving it a 4* instead of a 5* is the fight scenes. They are well thought out, but it's very obvious she didn't check with anyone with martial arts or combat experience. It's would help with the flow of those scenes... I just couldn't picture in any way how you could upper-cut to the stomach after bowling into someone, knocking them back, then headbutt when their face when came forward. Maybe if you are 4"5... Just throwing out words like upper-cut or sidekick without knowing what biomechanics are involved or basic physics kills the flow of the story. For me, it was like driving 60mph over a speed bump when I really was enjoying everything else.

Lindsay Buroker's Dragon of the Gates: Kingdoms at War isn't just a fantasy adventure; it's a deeply human story cloaked in magic and dragons. While the fantastical elements are undeniably captivating – the powerful dragons, the intricate political machinations, the breathtaking landscapes – it's the characters that truly steal the show. The story centers around a complex cast of individuals, each grappling with their own flaws, ambitions, and vulnerabilities. The protagonist, while possessing extraordinary abilities, is far from perfect. We witness their struggles, their moments of doubt, their triumphs and failures. They're not a flawless hero; they make mistakes, they learn from them, and they grow throughout the narrative. This relatability is key to the book's success; it allows the reader to connect with the protagonist on a deeply personal level, investing in their journey and rooting for their success.

Love it! Absolutely hooked on the story, reading it feels like watching a fantasy series. Fast paced, engaging, with plot twists and turns, sometimes quirky and funny, and very well written. Made me sit on the edge of my seat as well as giggle out loud. Already got the second book in the series.
