About this ebook

For centuries, sailors have noted that it's not the oceans that cause harm, but the hard bits around the edges. A parallel can be drawn to recreational sailors who are comfortable sailing in local or coastal waters but have not totally mastered the skills of returning the boat to the slip. Watching neighbors expertly guide their boats into slips and hearing them discuss terms like prop walk and spring lines, they realize there may be a gap in their knowledge.

Now for the good news - this is the book you've been looking for. It is the most complete book written on everything you should know about docking your monohull or catamaran. Covering boat characteristics, environmental effects, and different scenarios, you will find a technique to safely dock your boat under any condition. Designed to be read in conjunction with American Sailing's 118 Docking Endorsement course, it is also a stand-alone book for any sailor wanting to improve boat handling skills. You will find everything you need to know in this 137-page book.

- Learn why your boat handles like it does

- Learn how to assess the variable effects

- Learn to use external clues to assist your maneuvering

- Learn to use spring lines and prop walk to your advantage

- Impress your boat neighbors with your new skills

- Learn to love docking

About the author

Lisa Batchelor Frailey was dunked into the Chesapeake Bay in a crab net as an infant and was marinized for life. Her career in the US Navy as a navigator, meteorologist, and oceanographer allowed her to cruise and race on many exotic seas; she met her husband, Andy Batchelor, at a regatta in the Bay of Napoli. Lisa retired from the Navy as a Captain in 2006, and she and Andy opened Sail Solomons, operating in the Chesapeake Bay and Caribbean. In 2015 they launched Kinetic Sailing with a more global scope. Lisa is a USCG captain, ASA Master Instructor, ocean passagemaker, marine consultant, and a six-time recipient of ASA’s “Outstanding Instructor” award. Lisa and Andy are regular speakers to live and virtual audiences. Lisa is also a charter broker, and uses her global sailing expertise to help sailors find a perfect sailing vacation. Lisa’s passion for sailing is evident in the articles she has written for numerous nautical publications, and in the five ASA textbooks co-written with Andy.

Andy Batchelor was born in Weymouth, England, within hailing distance of where Britain’s Olympic Sailing Center now stands, and was destined to become a sailor. On retiring from the Royal Air Force in 2002 as a Wing Commander, Andy decided to live his dream and embark on a new career in sailing. Fortunately, all the stars aligned. He met his future wife, Lisa Frailey, in Italy and together they launched “Sail Solomons School and Charters,” which received ASA’s “Outstanding School” award five times. Andy is a USCG captain, an ASA Senior Master Instructor, and a seven-time recipient of ASA’s “Outstanding Instructor” award. He and Lisa have made numerous coastal passages and ocean voyages, cruising for seven years on their Passport 47 and Outbound 46. They currently sail and race locally on their Saffier 33. Andy and Lisa have helped sailors at all levels to achieve their dreams. Their expertise was invaluable in the writing of this book, their fifth ASA textbook.

Jonathan Payne is a sailor and outdoorsman who currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer for American Sailing. Jonathan started to learn to sail on his thirtieth birthday in Utah and has since moved to Los Angeles to be closer to the water. Before American Sailing, he had an exciting career in advertising, working with brands like Gold’s Gym and Volkswagen. His favorite sailing experience was sailing around the islands of Tahiti for two weeks, and he is constantly looking for a way back to Papeete and its crystal-clear waters.

Jenny McCain learned to sail in a community sailing program in Northern Michigan. After becoming a sailing instructor, she realized her desire to explore more sailing opportunities. She became a captain, an ASA instructor, and sailing school director at Great Lakes Sailing Co. She then attended NorthU sailing clinic in St. Thomas, which opened up the world of sailing, with later delivery opportunities in the Caribbean and the Gulf. She now works as Director of Educational Development at American Sailing. She was also an educator in public schools for 15 years with a masters degree as a literacy specialist. Editing this book and helping with its production was extremely rewarding for her.

Peter Isler is one of America’s best known sailors both on and off the water. Since being named Collegiate Sailor of the Year while at Yale University, he has been part of the five America’s Cup campaigns, winning it twice as navigator aboard Dennis Conner’s Stars & Stripes and covering it three times on television. He is the author of four books, including the bestselling Sailing for Dummies and Peter Isler’s Little Blue Book of Sailing Secrets. Still active as a professional sailor, Peter is also a popular motivational speaker for corporate audiences. As a director of ASA since 1983, he has devoted a great deal of his time to bringing fresh faces into sailing.

Carol Chu’s passion for sailing and photography have allowed her to cover major yacht races in the Northeast and abroad. Some of the races have included: The Ocean Race, 12 Metre Worlds, Block Island Race Week, Camden Classics Cup and the Candy Store Cup. Her photos have been published on websites, magazine covers and race pages. She was a graphic designer in the television industry, and also a sail maker in Maine before joining American Sailing as a designer/illustrator. In her spare time, she can be found on the waters of Casco Bay off the coast of Maine, or chasing racing yachts wherever the wind takes her.
