Eva doesn’t want to be the lead candidate for the Human Crown—especially since she’s Solhan and not human at all, and certainly not after the elf interim council declares democracy a treasonous activity punishable by death. The only thing no one counted on was a new player on the board, or rather a very, very old one. People are turning into puppets under the control of an ancient bodysnatching plant, but someone is pulling the puppeteer’s strings, and as usual, nothing is what it seems. Can Eva stop the plant creature from taking over the world? Or should she let it win just to avoid a fate worse than death—being elected?
Eva has become the cliché, a hard-drinking, hard-nosed private detective, bitter and uncaring. Or so she thinks. A high-profile murder throws Highcrowne into chaos, and the man she’s falling in love with, despite her best efforts to avoid it, is the prime suspect. She sets out to prove his innocence and uncovers plots within plots, and dangers far greater than the world’s deadliest assassin or even the bodysnatching plant alien taking over the world. Old lovers and old gods come back to haunt her, and in the end, she learns that sometimes winning means losing.
Lorel and Clayton were teen sweethearts, brought together by a fierce love of books (and hormones) and have been married for 35 years. As writing partners, they meld logic, creativity, and genres. Fantasy, science-fiction, mystery, horror, steampunk, thriller, romance, classics … they read them all, and if they can mix them they will!

Lorel has a PhD in molecular biology and Once Upon a Time did cancer research before turning to the dark side (aka marketing), but she uses her powers for good, helping raise funds for charity. She loves books, movies and animals, and would gladly spend all day with a cat on her lap and the wind in her hair (Conan reference there), while tapping out a story on her keyboard. Or maybe a movie script. With coffee of course. And lots of chocolate!
Clayton is a classically trained painter turned digital artist who now glares at the AI generated images currently obliterating the slim chance artists once had of earning a living. Clayton is severely dyslexic but loves books and storytelling. He adds vast imagination and a discerning ear for effective prose to their creative collaboration, not to mention the book cover art, and he has recently started writing himself using speech recognition software.
