बिहार राज्य से पृथक् राज्य बने झारखंड के गठन में सुविधा-वितरण असमानताओं का बड़ा हाथ रहा। पृथक् झारखंड की माँग 19वीं शताब्दी के प्रारंभ से ही होने लगी थी, जबकि उस समय भारत अंग्रेजी शासन के अधीन था। सौ साल तक चला यह आंदोलन पृथक् राज्य के गठन के लिए विश्व में सबसे अधिक अवधि तक चलनेवाला आंदोलन रहा। जनजातीय बहुल झारखंड वैसे तो प्राकृतिक संपदाओं से भरपूर है, लेकिन शिक्षा के अभाव ने इस क्षेत्र को बहुत समय तक विकास की मुख्यधारा से दूर रखा। अपने अस्तित्व को बचाने और अपने अधिकारों को प्राप्त करने में झारखंड का आंदोलन और भी विशेष हो जाता है। जनजातियों का दमन और शोषण रोकने के लिए झारखंड की भूमिका पर ऐसे अनेक आंदोलन हुए, जो अठारहवीं शताब्दी के प्रारंभ से ही हो रहे थे। इन आंदोलनों में यहाँ की जनजातियों ने क्या कुछ सहा और देखा, इसकी कल्पना करना भी कठिन है। आज झारखंड पृथक् राज्य बनकर विकास के पथ पर अग्रसर है।
