La primera edición, publicada en 1925, no provocó grandes comentarios ni atrajo sobre sí rápidamente la mirada de sus contemporáneos. Por el contrario, debieron transcurrir largos años hasta que en 1933 Georges Bataille prestara particular interés a la obra, cuya recepción no fue favorecida por la sociología sino por la helenística, la lingüística y, finalmente, la antropología, de la mano de Claude Lévi-Strauss. En efecto, fue la introducción que éste preparó en 1950 para un volumen de Marcel Mauss que incluía el Ensayo...' lo que propició que la obra comenzara a ser reconocida como una de las más importantes contribuciones a las ciencias del hombre.'
