Für die Heine-Säkularausgabe musste eine Entscheidung bezüglich der chronologischen Anordnung getroffen werden. Gewählt wurde eine Anordnung, die zusammengehörige Werkkomplexe, zum Beispiel die Prosateile der "Reisebilder" oder die "Lutezia", als selbständige Bandeinheiten begreift. Ähnlich wie Heine selbst in der Ausgabe seiner französischsprachigen Werke bestimmte, werden in der Säkularausgabe gleichzeitig entstandene Texte nach inhaltlicher Übereinstimmung zusammengefast, so das sich eine leicht zu überschauende Anordnung des Gesamtwerkes ergibt. Band 18 enthält „De la France", „Salon de 1831" und die „Lettres confidentielles".
