Il racconto “Morfina”, che si ispira ad un’esperienza personale dello stesso Michail Bulgakov, apparve per la prima volta nel 1927, sulla rivista «Il lavoratore medico». Dopo aver assunto la morfina al fine di calmare una forte allergia, Bulgakov aveva infatti potuto sperimentare sulla propria pelle la tragica dipendenza dal farmaco, arrivando a farsi sino a due punture al giorno. Il racconto servì dunque allo scrittore anche per esorcizzare definitivamente quella penosa esperienza. Fatto sta che Bulgakov teneva tantissimo a questa sua opera, che, come è stato detto, forse mascherava anche i suoi sentimenti nei confronti della Rivoluzione d’Ottobre; e che, certamente, rappresenta uno dei racconti più perfetti del grande scrittore.
