About this ebook

NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE, STARRING RACHEL WEISZ AND RACHEL MCADAMS

By the age of 32, Ronit has left London and transformed her life. She has become a cigarette-smoking, wise-cracking, New York career woman, who is in love with a married man.

But when Ronit's father dies she is called back into the very different world of her childhood, a world she thought she had left far behind. The orthodox Jewish suburb of Hendon, north London is outraged by Ronit and her provocative ways. But Ronit is shocked too by the confrontation with her past. And when she meets up with her childhood girlfriend Esti, she is forced to think again about what she has left behind.

From the author of The Power, winner of the Baileys Women's Prize for Fiction 2017, Naomi Alderman's Disobedience is an insightful and witty novel on the search for love, tolerance and faith.

'Funny, tender and insightful' Guardian

'A wonderful novel . . . rich and fresh and fascinating' Sunday Times

This was a spiritual journey of forgiveness, honesty and closure. A brilliant read. Being part of the LGBTQI+ community and reading this makes it feel so ever more special because Ronit is this powerhouse who has much to stand for and who has much to receive herself. Then we have Esti, her demeanour soft and eyes and mind always watching. It's great seeing them be there for each other yet also not being able to go back to a time in childhood where things are always easier. Dovid's presence urked me at first but slowly I became attached to his quiet and calm state and felt the ending would have been nothing without his wisdom. If you are reading this because of the movie, I have to warn you that it won't be exactly as the book (obviously haha). The directors version of this story is good but the book in my opinion wins. It's more intricate and ever so surprising. Beautiful, emotional and I have to admit I laughed sometimes. Would highly recommend.

Compelling journey into faith and what life can be like. Totally removed from the movie. Wonderful book showing the joy of life, quietly rather than with melodrama. Entertaining.
