Het is 1917. In een openbare verklaring neemt Siegfried Sassoon, dichter en officier in het Britse leger, stelling tegen de zinloosheid van de oorlog. Zijn provocerende aanklacht, gericht tot de politici die verantwoordelijk zijn voor de slachtingen aan het front, brengt hem echter niet voor de krijgsraad. Sassoon wordt opgenomen in het militaire hospitaal Craiglockhart, waar het tot een treffen komt tussen hem en dr. Rivers. Niemandsland is het eerste deel van de Weg der geesten-trilogie, Pat Barkers levensechte evocatie van de Eerste Wereldoorlog. De andere twee delen zijn Het oog in de deur (in 1993 bekroond met de Guardian Fiction Prize) en Weg der geesten (bekroond met de Booker Prize 1995).
