Benedictus, die rond 550 overleed, schreef zijn Regel als praktische leidraad voor het kloosterleven in een abdij. Hij heeft aandacht voor drie essentiële aspecten - studie, gebed en arbeid - en hij beklemtoont het belang van nederigheid, gehoorzaamheid en tevredenheid.
Patrick Lateur ging de uitdaging aan om deze beroemde tekst opnieuw te vertalen. Deze vertaling uit 2010 (met de nodige verklarende annotaties) leunt zo goed mogelijk aan tegen de brontekst en tracht de kleur en tonaliteit van het origineel te bewaren. Ter vergelijking wordt daarom ook de Latijnse tekst afgedrukt.
