Der als Begründer des Pietismus im Luthertum bekannte Philipp Jacob Spener (1635–1705) verwandte im Laufe seines Lebens immer mehr Zeit darauf, eine ausgebreitete Korrespondenz zu pflegen. Aus fern und nah, von allen Ständen, von Fremden und vertrauten Freunden erreichten ihn mit jedem Posttag Fragen und Berichte, auf die es zu reagieren galt, nicht nur aus Anstand, sondern weil das Briefeschreiben der einzig praktikable Weg war, um mit der Welt in Verbindung zu bleiben und sich selbst in ihr zurechtzufinden. So unterschiedlich wie die Korrespondenzpartner waren auch die Themen, mit denen sich Spener auseinanderzusetzen hatte. So erhält man mit der Lektüre seiner Briefe willkommene Einsichten in die Gedanken- und Lebenswelt eines Mannes des 17. Jahrhunderts, der stets beides sein wollte: gelehrt und fromm, christlich und bürgerlich. Aus der großen Anzahl von Briefen Speners wird hier eine Auswahl geboten, die Einsichten in sein Privatleben, in seinen Umgang mit Menschen, in sein Verständnis der Natur und sein gesellschaftliches und politisches Denken erlaubt. Insights about his Letters, selected, partly translated from Latin] In the course of his life, Philipp Jacob Spener (1635–1705), known as the founder of Pietism in Lutheranism, used more and more time to cultivate an extensive correspondence. From near and far, from every status, from strangers and friends, every day brought him questions and reports to react to, not just out of decency, but because letter writing was the only practicable way to communicate with the world, to stay connected and to understand oneself in it. His interlocutors were different, as were the topics Spener had to deal with. By reading his letters, one receives welcome insights into thought and world view of a man of the 17th century, who wanted to be both learned and pious, Christian and bourgeois. From the large number of Spener's letters a selection is presented in this book, which allows insights into his private life, his behaviour towards people, his understanding of nature and his social and political thinking.
