About this ebook

'A masterpiece of imagination' Stephanie Garber

No one believes in them. But soon no one will forget them.

From New York Times bestselling author Roshani Chokshi comes a novel set in Paris during a time of extraordinary change - one that is full of mystery, decadence, and dangerous desires . . .

Paris, 1889. The city is on the cusp of industry and power, and the Exposition Universelle has breathed new life into the streets and dredged up ancient secrets.

Here, no one keeps tabs on dark truths better than treasure hunter and wealthy hotelier Séverin Montagnet-Alarie. When the elite, ever-powerful Order of Babel coerces him to help them on a mission, Séverin is offered a treasure that he never imagined: his true inheritance.

To hunt down the ancient artifact the Order seeks, Séverin calls upon a band of unlikely experts: an engineer with a debt to pay; a historian banished from his home; a dancer with a sinister past; and a brother in arms if not blood.

Together they will join Séverin as he explores the dark, glittering heart of Paris. What they find might change the course of history - but only if they can stay alive.

I am so delighted with this book that I have the second one already waiting to be picked up. The goods: ▪︎ The characters, I was surprised how easily I cared about them and how engaged I was with their background and comradeship. ▪︎ The mysteries, the riddles, and the challenges they face connected with the heist plot of this first book and what is being prepared for the rest ( attention: trilogy)▪︎ Last but not least, the pacing and page turning moments and the fact that there was not a single boring moment that forced me to read diagonally... What did not quite convince me was the villain of the story who seemed a bit flat and cartoonish, and maybe the lack of depth into the magic world. While it has a good atmosphere and descriptions, magic is more a tool that serves the plot. I am between 4 and 5 stars 🌟, giving 4 for now and see how the trilogy ends...
