‘संस्कार’ या ‘संस्कृति’ शब्द संस्कृत भाषा का शब्द है; जिसका अर्थ है—मनुष्य का वह कर्म; जो अलंकृत और सुसज्जित हो। प्रकारांतर से संस्कृति शब्द का अर्थ है—धर्म। संस्कृति और संस्कार में कोई अंतर नहीं है। दोनों का एक ही अर्थ है; मात्र ‘इकार’ की मात्रा का अंतर है। हिंदू धर्म में मुख्य रूप से सोलह संस्कार हैं; जो संस्कार मनुष्य की जाति और अवस्था के अनुसार किए जानेवाले धर्म कार्यों की प्रतिष्ठा करते हैं।
हिंदू धर्म-दर्शन की संस्कृति यज्ञमय है; क्योंकि सृष्टि ही यज्ञ का परिणाम है; उसका अंत (मनुष्य की अंत्येष्टि) भी यज्ञमय है (शव को चितारूपी हवन कुंड में आहुति के रूप में हवन करना)। इस यज्ञमय क्रिया (संस्कार) में गर्भाधान से लेकर अंत्येष्टि क्रिया तक सभी कृत्य (संस्कार) यज्ञमय संस्कार के रूप में जाने और माने जाते हैं।
हिंदू धर्म के ये सोलह संस्कार मात्र कर्मकांड नहीं हैं; जिन्हें यों ही ढोया जा रहा है अपितु पूर्णत: वैज्ञानिक एवं तथ्यपरक हैं। उनमें से कुछ का तो देश-काल-परिस्थिति के कारण लोप हो गया है और कुछ का एक से अधिक संस्कारों में समावेश; कुछ का अब भी प्रचलन है और कुछ प्रतीक मात्र रह गए हैं; जबकि सभी सोलह संस्कारों को करना प्रत्येक हिंदू के लिए आवश्यक है।
प्रस्तुत पुस्तक में सरल-सुबोध भाषा में इन्हीं संस्कारों के औचित्य को बताया गया है। विश्वास है सुधी पाठक इस पुस्तक के माध्यम से अपनी भुलाई हुई विरासत से जुड़कर लाभान्वित होंगे।
