Affligé aux épaules de deux serpents, le roi Zohak faisait sacrifier tous les matins deux jeunes gens pour nourrir ses monstres de cervelle humaine. La légende raconte que trois chevaliers, déguisés en médecins, épargnèrent une victime sur deux en substituant sa cervelle à celle d'un mouton. A la fin du règne de Zohak, un forgeron nommé kawa, dont seize fils avaient été sacrifiés, se révolta quand son dernier enfant fut capturé. De cette légende, l'auteur donne ici une version reliée à l'histoire contemporaine du Kurdistan, le "Pays-des-mots-gelés", le pays où la langue kurde interdite, traquée, niée, se fige et gèle dans la bouche des hommes.
