कोलकाता निवासी शंकर (मणि शंकर मुखर्जी) बँगला के सबसे ज्यादा पढ़े जानेवाले उपन्यासकारों में से हैं। हावड़ा में स्वामी विवेकानंद के नाम से जुड़े विद्यालय के छात्र के रूप में काफी कम उम्र में शंकर ने रामकृष्ण के बारे में जानना शुरू किया। उसके बाद अनवरत साधना के फलस्वरूप विवेकानंद के विशेषज्ञ के रूप में आपकी पहचान बनी। ‘चौरंगी’ उनकी अब तक की सबसे सफल पुस्तक है, जिसका हिंदी और अंग्रेजी भाषाओं में अनुवाद हो चुका है; साथ ही सन् 1968 में उस पर बँगला में फिल्म भी बन चुकी है। ‘सीमाबद्ध’ और ‘जन अरण्य’ उनके ऐसे उपन्यास हैं, जिन पर सुप्रसिद्ध फिल्मकार सत्यजित रे ने फिल्में बनाईं। हिंदी में प्रकाशित उनकी कृति ‘विवेकानंद की आत्मकथा’ बहुप्रशंसित रही है।
