चंद्रनाथ था एक भावुक युवक। भावुकतावश उसने एक गरीब माँ की लड़की सरयू से शादी कर ली। कुछ दिनों बाद यह डर हुआ कि समाज सरयू को अपवित्र कर देगा। उसका अपराध यही था कि उसकी माँ एक लंपट नवयुवक के प्रेम में फँसकर भाग आई थी। इसलिए वह वेश्या थी और सरयू हुई वेश्या की लड़की।
चंद्रनाथ ने जब सुना; तो समाज के डर से सरयू का परित्याग कर देने को राजी हो गया। सरयू दया और प्रेम की मूर्ति थी। उसका संस्कार ऐसा था कि पति पर वह ईश्वर जैसी श्रद्धा-भक्ति रखती थी। पति की आवरू पर वह आँच नहीं आने देना चाहती थी। इसलिए उसने स्वयं जहर खा लेने का प्रयास किया। किंतु समय पर वह ऐसा न करने के लिए मजबूर हुई; क्योंकि वह माँ बनने वाली थी।
फिर सरयू की सहनशीलता के सामने सबको झुकना पड़ा। अंत में चंद्रनाथ की हिम्मत हुई और वह सरयू को घर ले गया—जो बहिष्कृत होने के कारण काशी चली आई थी। किसी पर कोई आँच नहीं आई।
लेकिन पिस गए बेचारे कैलाश इस झगड़े में। कैलाश काका का कोई अपना नहीं था और न अपना कहने वाला। यदि कोई था भी; तो वह थी उसकी शतरंज की पोटली। सरयू वेश्या की लड़की थी; इसलिए किसी ने उसे जगह न दी थी। कैलाश काका उसे अपने घर ले गए; और उसके बेटे विशु के प्यार में इतना फँस गए कि उससे अलग होकर रह ही न सके; मर गए।
इस पुस्तक में ‘बोझ’ नामक बड़ी कहानी भी है; जो एक ऐसे युवक की कहानी है—जिसकी नवविवाहिता पत्नी हैजे से पीड़ित हो; उसके सुख-स्वप्न को भंग कर; अपने सास-ससुर को अश्रु-प्रवाह में बहने को छोड़ जाती है। प्रियजनों के कहने पर वह दूसरा विवाह नलिनी से करता है। नलिनी सुंदर तो है ही; बुद्धिमती भी है। उसे पाकर भी सत्येंद्र अपने सिर पर बोझ का अनुभव करता है। नलिनी पति को हर प्रकार प्रसन्न देखना चाहती है। वे जानती हैं कि वे सरला—अपनी पहली पत्नी को नहीं भूले। वह अपने पति की व्यथा की भागीदार हो गई। पति ने उसके साथ उपेक्षा का व्यवहार छोड़ दिया। लेकिन शीघ्र ही भयंकर कोलाहल करती हेम आ पहुँची। वह उसकी बालापन की सहेली है। वह उसे बलात् अपने घर लिवा ले जाती है; और जब नलिनी घर लौटती तो बड़ी देर हो जाती है। सत्येंद्र असुविधा अनुभव कर उससे विरक्त हो गए। बात बहुत बढ़ गई। एक दिन भाई के साथ नलिनी मायके चल दी; तो फिर लौटकर नहीं आई। पति ने तीसरा विवाह किया; उसने अमूल्य उपहार भेजा तो दुःसह बोझ से सत्येंद्र छटपटाने लगे।
