De dokter en het lichte meisje (1951) - waarin hij zijn ervaringen als waarnemend huisarts verwerkte - deed bij verschijnen veel stof opwaaien. Hoofdpersoon van deze nog altijd zeer moderne roman is de filosofisch ingestelde jonge arts Schildkamp, die er een nogal onconventionele levensvisie op nahoudt inzake vrouwen, met name doktersvrouwen. Plots lijkt hij tot inkeer te komen.
