Sinclair Lewis, né en 1885 dans le Minnesota, est un romancier américain célèbre pour sa satire sociale. Il critique le conformisme et l’hypocrisie de la société américaine dans des œuvres marquantes comme "Main Street" (1920) et "Babbitt" (1922). Premier Américain à recevoir le prix Nobel de littérature en 1930, il s’attaque aussi au mercantilisme médical "Arrowsmith", à la religion "Elmer Gantry" ou au fascisme "It Can’t Happen Here". Il meurt en 1951 en Italie, après une carrière en déclin.
