Insbesondere haben sie dazu beigetragen, das Fach auf ein solides Fundament zu stellen: Ohne Paradoxa wäre es nicht gelungen, die neun Grundregeln zu formulieren, auf denen heute so gut wie alles in der Mathematik beruht – von Geometrie über Analysis bis hin zu Algebra. Aber auch im Alltag begegnen uns immer wieder Situationen, die paradox erscheinen. Warum fährt ein Fahrstuhl zum Beispiel immer in die falsche Richtung, wenn man ihn ruft? Und weshalb hat der öffentliche Nahverkehr immer Verspätung, wenn man zur Haltestelle rennt? Auch wenn das nach Murphy′s Law klingt, steckt oft ein mathematisch begründbares Phänomen hinter den Unannehmlichkeiten. Bevor Sie in die Lektüre starten, lasse ich Ihnen noch eines meiner Lieblingsparadoxa zum Nachdenken da: »Dieser Satz ist eine Lüge.«
