In der Geschichte des Wissens in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts erscheint die Detektivgeschichte als ein neues Genre, das geradezu paradigmatisch unterschiedliche Diskurse umgreift und in einem wirkungsvollen Narrativ literarisch modelliert. Die sensationellen Einsichten und Erkenntnisformen so unterschiedlicher Disziplinen wie der Evolutionsbiologie, der Archäologie, der Virologie und der Psychoanalyse werden aber nicht nur in der Detektivliteratur sowohl thematisch aufgenommen als auch strukturell durchgespielt – Wissenschaftler wie Charles Darwin, Heinrich Schliemann, Robert Koch und Sigmund Freud arbeiten dort, wo sie als Schriftsteller in eigener Sache auftreten, ihrerseits an der Entwicklung eines detektivischen Narrativs mit. Dieses Buch untersucht in exemplarischen Einzellektüren die epistemischen Voraussetzungen und hermeneutischen Konsequenzen eines zwischen Literatur und Wissenschaften changierenden Erzählverfahrens, dessen eigentliche Suche dem verlorenen Anfang gilt. Taking a slightly new approach to a staple subject of literary studies, the author identifies detective fiction as an inherently interdiscursive genre whose etiological narrative emerges in literary as well as scientific texts from the second half of the 19th century onwards. The volume focuses on the scientific fields of evolutionary theory, archaeology, bacteriology, and psychoanalysis, shedding a literary light on works by Charles Darwin, Robert Koch, Heinrich Schliemann, and Sigmund Freud. Literary works analysed range from well-known and beloved representatives of detective fiction such as Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Hound of the Baskervilles" (1902) to more rarely discussed texts such as Theodor Fontane's "Unterm Birnbaum" (1885).

Dr. Stefanie Seidel studierte Komparatistik, Germanistik und Latinistik in Tübingen und Oxford, Großbritannien, und wurde an der Universität Göttingen promoviert. Derzeit lehrt sie an der Universität Tübingen.
