“रूपमती का जौहर” एक पटकथा है जो एक ऐतिहासिक प्रेमकथा पर आधारित है । इसका मध्यकालीन भारत के उपलब्ध इतिहास में बहुत कम वर्णन है, क्युंकि इस दौरान हमारा मध्यकालीन भारत का इतिहास अपने पूरे शबाब पर था और मुग़लों का वर्चस्व उत्तर भारत और मध्य भारत में बहुत शक्तिशाली था । हमायूं के बाद मुग़ल बादशाह अकबर आगरा में गद्दीनशीं हो चुका था । उसका नज़रिया सभी पहले के मुग़ल बादशाह पिता हमायूं और उसके दादा बाबर से भिन्न था । इस पुस्तक में पटकथा के रूप में मांडु के सुल्तान बाज़बहादुर और धर्मपुरी राज्य की रानी रूपमती की अनूठी प्रेम कथा का प्रतितुकरण है । बाज़बहादुर, रूपमती और अन्य सभी क़िरदार कहानी के ताने-बाने की मज़बूत कड़ी हैं और सम्भवत: वे सभी इस प्रेमकथा के पूरक रहे हैं जो कि कथा को सम्पूर्ण आकार देते हैं । मुझे इस बात का हर्ष है कि मैं इस ऐतिहासिक प्रेम कथा को एक नाट्य-रूपांतर के माध्यम से दर्शकों तक इतिहास को दबे हुए पन्नो से निकाल कर पहुंचा पा रहा हूं । आशा करता हूं मैं सभी दर्शकों को और पाठकों को इस कथानक के माध्यम से उस समय में ले जा पाउंगा जब इस कथा ने जन्म लिया और बाद में दम तोड़ने के बाद अमर भी हुई । मांडु का दुर्ग आज भी इस कथा के साक्षी के रूप में अडिग़ खड़ा है जिसे मुग़ल सल्तनत नहीं मिटा सकी भले ही सल्तनत ने लाख चेष्टा की हो की इस सत्य कथा के माध्यम से मुग़लों की क्रूरता के क़िस्से तारीख़ में ना लिखे जा सके ।
