Für die urbane Lebenswirklichkeit im Mittelmeerraum bildete das Stadttor eine Konstante, die über die Antike hinaus von Bedeutung blieb. Es hat die kulturelle Praxis, eine Stadt zu betreten oder zu verlassen, dauerhaft geprägt.
