Hodder are extremely honoured to be the publishers for the Dalai Lama, an inspirational teacher and leader, acclaimed for his work throughout the world.
Tenzin Gyatso, His Holiness the fourteenth Dalai Lama of Tibet, is the spiritual and temporal leader of the Tibetan people.
He was born on 6 July 1935 in Tasker, a small village in north eastern Tibet. At the age of two, he was recognised as the reincarnation of the thirteenth Dalai Lama. In accordance with the Buddhist tradition, he was brought to Lhasa, and enthroned in 1940.
At the age of fifteen, he was called upon to assume full responsibility as Head of State and Government. His efforts to bring about a peaceful solution to the Sino-Tibetan problem were thwarted, and following the suppression of the Tibetan national uprising on 10 March 1959, His Holiness escaped to India where he was given political asylum.
In exile, he has successfully led his people in the field of education, rehabilitation and preservation of the ancient and unique Tibetan culture. He is recognised as an advocate of world peace and inter-religious understanding and has received many international awards including, most notably, the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989.
His Holiness has written several books, including the international bestseller The Art of Happiness with Howard C. Cutler, which has sold over 3 million copies worldwide. It is now celebrating its 10th anniversary and Hodder Stoughton will be marking this with a special reissue of the classic guide, due for publication in October.
