It was a moonless night as the thick fog rolled across Marshfield Marsh, shrouding the twisted trees and murky waters in an eerie cloak. The air was thick with the scent of decay and damp earth, and a sense of foreboding hung heavy in the air. In the distance, the old Marshfield Manor loomed like a specter, its crumbling façade barely visible through the sinister mist.

Inside the manor, a group of friends gathered for a weekend retreat. They were unaware of the dark history that surrounded the marsh, and as they laughed and joked, the malevolent mist crept closer, curling its tendrils around the ancient stone walls. Among the group was Emma, a no-nonsense skeptic who brushed off the local legends with a dismissive wave of her hand. "Ghosts and curses are just superstitions," she declared as she sipped her wine.

But as the night wore on and the mist thickened, strange things began to happen. Lights flickered and faded, unexplained shadows slithered along the walls, and a chill settled over the manor that had nothing to do with the weather. The group's joking and laughter turned to nervous glances and hushed whispers. "I told you there was something off about this place," murmured Jake, a self-proclaimed horror enthusiast.

As the tension mounted, the group gathered in the grand drawing room, searching for a rational explanation for the mounting unease. "Maybe it's just the old wiring," offered Amanda, trying to keep her voice steady. But her words were cut short by a blood-curdling scream that echoed through the manor, freezing the group in place.
