Thomas W. Gaehtgens war Gründungsdirektor des Deutschen Forums für Kunstgeschichte in Paris und langjähriger Leiter des Getty Research Institutes in Los Angeles. Zuvor lehrte er Kunstgeschichte an der FU Berlin.
