Travis soupire et rit avant de me demander où je suis. Mon regard remonte sur l’homme immobile devant moi — m’arrêtant un instant sur ses fesses mises en valeur dans son pantalon sombre. Si je réponds en français, il va forcément comprendre que j’ai fait exprès de ne pas retenir les portes. Tant pis, je m’en fiche, après tout, j’avais le droit de vouloir être seule dans cet ascenseur.
― Calme-toi, je suis dans l’ascenseur, j’arrive.
Comme je l’avais présagé, l’homme devant moi se retourne aussitôt, et je lui offre mon plus beau sourire. Travis, lui, raccroche en me maudissant de l’avoir fait attendre. Alors que l’inconnu va me parler, son téléphone sonne à son tour.
― Oui, je l’ai trouvé. J’arrive. Je suis avec une Espagnole à tomber par terre. Non, t’inquiète, elle ne pige pas le français. Je vais prendre une photo d’elle pour te prouver que les anges existent.
Il dit tout ça en gardant son regard planté sur moi. Je me marre, et le laisse raccrocher avant de lui parler.
― Prendre une photo pour te prouver que les anges existent ? Ça doit être la pire phrase de drague que j’ai entendue !
― Ce genre de phrase est seulement mon plan A, répond-il avec un clin d’œil.
― Alors quel est le plan B ?
― Vous prendre en otage.
À peine a-t-il terminé sa phrase que l’ascenseur s’arrête soudainement, les lumières s’éteignent et se rallument, et le bouton de l’alarme clignote. Je fronce les sourcils et regarde l’inconnu devant moi, prête à le battre à mort avec tout ce que je trouverai dans mon sac s’il essaie sérieusement de me faire quoi que ce soit. Mais quand je l’observe, je me rends compte qu’il a l’air tout aussi surpris que moi. Ma main part tout de même à l’intérieur de mon sac et cherche à tâtons une arme potentielle. Je tombe sur une brosse et l’empoigne : s’il s’approche, je l’assomme.
Du moins, j’essaierai.
