About this ebook

"The ticket-of-leave man" was Taylor's best play, based on "Le Retour de Melun" by Brisebarre and Nuz. The two copies of the play are: 1. The prompt copy for the Australian production by Walter Bentley's company (ca. 1876?). This consists of the printed playscript mounted into a small note book. The text is extensively revised and annotated with stage directions, sketches of stage lay-outs, property lists, sound effects, etc. 2. W.J. Wilson's copy, which is also extensively annotated for his production of the play, 1868. The play was first performed in London in 1865 and it was one of the first melodramas to deal with criminal life in London.
