गोस्वामी तुलसीदास का जन्म सोरों शूकरक्षेत्र, वर्तमान में कासगंज (एटा) उत्तर प्रदेश में माना जाता है। उनके पिता का नाम आत्माराम दुबे तथा माता का नाम हुलसी था। अति सुंदर भारद्वाज गोत्र की कन्या रत्नावली के साथ उनका विवाह हुआ। पत्नी द्वारा फटकारे जाने पर उन्होंने काशी में विद्याध्ययन किया और विद्दान्‌ बने। चित्रकूट पर उन्हें भगवान्‌ राम के दर्शन हुए। अपने 126 वर्ष के दीर्घ जीवन-काल में तुलसीदासजी ने कालक्रमानुसार निम्नलिखित कालजयी ग्रंथों की रचनाएँ की-गीतावली (1571), कृष्ण-गीतावली (1571), रामचरितमानस (1574), पार्वती-मंगल (1582), विनय-पत्रिका (1582), जानकी-मंगल (1582), रामललानहछू (1583), वैराग्यसंदीपनी (1612), रामाज्ञाप्रश्न (1612), सतसई, बरवे रामायण (1612), कवितावली (1612), हनुमान बाहुक इत्यादि।
