Die Erzählung spielt während der Steinzeit und erzählt von einem Höhlenmenschen namens Ugh-Lomi, der sich mit der jungen Frau Eudena verbindet und seinen Rivalen, den De-facto-Stammesführer Uya, tötet. Im Exil wird Ugh-Lomi der erste Mann, der ein Pferd reitet und Stein und Holz zu einer Axt kombiniert. Er benutzt diese Waffe zusammen mit seinem Verstand, um Begegnungen mit Höhlenbären, Hyänen und Nashörnern zu überleben und letztendlich die Position des Stammesführers für sich selbst zu beanspruchen.
