Dieses Lehrbuch betritt Neuland in einem doppelten Sinn: Erstens existiert in Deutschland kein ähnlich umfassendes und aktuelles Einführungsbuch in die politikwissenschaftlichen Methoden, und zweitens wird der Stoff in einer neuen Konzeption dargestellt. Im ersten Teil werden die methodologischen Grundlagen systematisch abgehandelt, danach folgen fünf Kapitel aus der Werkstatt der Forschung: Wissenschaftler zeigen hier einzelne Methoden - Umfrageforschung, Dokumentenanalyse, Inhaltsanalyse, Experteninterviews und Aggregatdatenanalyse - in der praktischen Anwendung anhand ihrer eigenen Arbeiten. Das Lehrbuch ist dem Leitbild der "kritisch-empirischen Politikforschung" verpflichtet, es verknüpft pragmatisch quantitative und qualitative empirische Methoden auf anschauliche Weise.
