Das Wort samkhya erscheint erst in der jüngeren Upanisad-Literatur (nach Jacobs Concordance überhaupt nur je einmal in der Svetasvatara, Cûlikâ, Garbha und Muktika Upanisad) und dann häufiger im Mahabharata. Daß auch die grammatische Bildung des Wortes uns in spätere Zeiten weist, hat Weber hervorgehoben1, aber dabei betont, daß man daraus nicht etwa auf die späte Existenz der Spekulationsweise, die dieser Name bezeichnet, schließen dürfe. Wenn Kapila und seine ältesten Nachfolger ihrem System überhaupt einen Namen gegeben haben, so ist dieser verloren gegangen und später durch den uns geläufigen ersetzt worden.
