माँ भारती के अमर सपूत शहीद भगतसिंह के बारे में हम जब भी पढ़ते हैं, तो एक प्रश्न हमेशा मन में उठता है कि जो कुछ भी उन्होंने किया, उसकी प्रेरणा, हिम्मत और ताकत उन्हें कहाँ से मिली? उनकी उम्र 24 वर्ष भी नहीं हुई थी और उन्हें फाँसी पर चढ़ा दिया गया। लाहौर (पंजाब) सेंट्रल जेल में आखिरी बार कैदी रहने के दौरान (1929-1931) भगतसिंह ने आजादी, इनसाफ, खुद्दारी और इज्जत के संबंध में महान् दार्शनिकों, विचारकों, लेखकों तथा नेताओं के विचारों को खूब पढ़ा व आत्मसात् किया। इसी के आधार पर उन्होंने जेल में जो टिप्पणियाँ लिखीं, यह जेल डायरी उन्हीं का संकलन है। भगतसिंह ने यह सब भारतीयों को यह बताने के लिए लिखा कि आजादी क्या है, मुक्ति क्या है और इन अनमोल चीजों को बेरहम तथा बेदर्द अंग्रेजों से कैसे छीना जा सकता है, जिन्होंने भारतवासियों को बदहाल और मजलूम बना दिया था। भगतसिंह की फाँसी के बाद यह जेल डायरी भगतसिंह की अन्य वस्तुओं के साथ उनके पिता सरदार किशन सिंह को सौंपी गई थी। सरदार किशन सिंह की मृत्यु के बाद यह नोटबुक (भगतसिंह के अन्य दस्तावेजों के साथ) उनके (सरदार किशन सिंह) पुत्र श्री कुलबीर सिंह और उनकी मृत्यु के पश्चात् उनके पुत्र श्री बाबर सिंह के पास आ गई। श्री बाबर सिंह का सपना था कि भारत के लोग भी इस जेल डायरी के बारे में जानें। उन्हें पता चले कि भगतसिंह के वास्तविक विचार क्या थे। भारत के आम लोग भगतसिंह की मूल लिखावट को देख सकें। आखिर वे प्रत्येक जाति, धर्म के लोगों, गरीबों, अमीरों, किसानों, मजदूरों, सभी के हीरो हैं। भगतसिंह जोशो-खरोश से लबरेज क्रांतिकारी थे और उनकी सोच तथा नजरिया एकदम साफ था। वे भविष्य की ओर देखते थे। वास्तव में भविष्य उनकी रग-रग में बसा था। उनके अपूर्व साहस, राष्ट्रभक्ति और पराक्रम की झलक मात्र है हर भारतीय के लिए पठनीय यह जेल डायरी।.
